Reba McEntire is the daughter of Clark McEntire, a professional rodeo rider. As a child, Reba's mother, Jackie, taught her music. In 1971 Reba and her siblings formed a group and became local celebrities. The song was titled "The Ballad of John McEntire," and was dedicated to their grandfather.

The McEntire children had hoped to become a professional singing group, but those plans were over once Reba sang the national anthem at the National Rodeo Finals in Oklahoma City in 1974. Red Steagall heard her sing the anthem and immediately suggested she go to Nashville to record a demo. At first Reba was hesitant to pursue her solo career, but her family encouraged her to grab this opportunity.

Reba signed with Mercury Records in 1975, releasing her first record that same year. Her first singles didn't come close to making the Top 40. By 1978, Reba was back on the charts at number 20 with the double A-sided "Three Sheets in the Wind"/"I'd Really Love to See You Tonight". She didn't have any significant hits until the summer of 1980, when "(You Lift Me) Up to Heaven" made it to number eight on the charts. Two years later Reba's fan base had dramatically grown, she also had her first number one single, "Can't Even Get the Blues."

Reba left Mercury for MCA Records in 1984. At MCA, she was established as one of the decade's most popular country artists, selling over 20 million albums and winning four Female Vocalist of the Year awards from the Country Music Association. Over the next 8 years Reba had 24 top ten hits, including 14 number one singles. She had added in a little rock and pop essence to her music as well as her image.

In the '90s, Reba was as popular as in the previous decade. Her albums and her singles were always in the Top Ten on the charts, frequently at number one. Reba ventured out to add to her resume and begun acting in TV movies and feature films. To this day she continues to release sweet music and even has a hit weekly TV show titled "Reba". There's no slowing this country girl down.
