FIESTA BOWL INFORMATIONIn 1968, the idea for a bowl game in Phoenix, Arizona was first presented. President of Arizona State University G. Homer Durham was speaking at an athletic awards banquet and made the suggestion, as many had before him. But instead of the idea dying an instant death like usual, it gained momentum when Arizona Republic sports editor Verne Boatner wrote an article supporting the suggestion. Based on that column, a group of local businessmen and community leaders banded together to make the dream a reality. The key to the Fiesta effort was to organize a plan that would succeed in getting an NCAA sanction for the game, and to win over the Western Athletic Conference for a tie-up. With WAC Commissioner Wiles Hallock providing the direction, the group put together a proposal stressing many vital points. The most important was to make the bowl a charitable event, with part of the proceeds going to the fight against drugs. Furthermore, they emphasized that the Rose Bowl was the only bowl game not held in the South and that many WAC teams had been overlooked for bowl appearances because of this. Then to top it all off, they pointed out that Arizona had the population and climate that both California and the South had. Despite their efforts, the NCAA Council rejected the group's bid for the Fiesta Bowl that year. But instead of accepting the defeat and dropping the idea altogether, the group pushed on and a year later, in 1971, the bowl was approved and the Fiesta Bowl was born. The inaugural game was played on December 27, 1971, with the Arizona Sun Devils taking on the Florida State Seminoles. In front of over 51,000 spectators, the Sun Devils overtook the Seminoles in a 45 - 38 shootout. Every year, the Fiesta Bowl is held at Sun Devil Stadium, located on the campus of Arizona State University. Home to the Arizona Cardinals, it is actually the only collegiate stadium that hosts an NFL team. Settled between two mountain buttes and offering spectacular views, Sun Devil Stadium is one of the more beautiful venues in which to catch a bowl game. |
