MLB All Star Game Fun Facts

Between 1959 and 1962, there were two All Star Games played each season. The second game was intended to raise money for the players' pension funds, as well as for other causes.

There have been two instances of fans stuffing the ballot boxes since fans were allowed to vote in 1947. First, in 1957, Cincinnati Reds fans stuffed boxes with the Cincinnati Enquirer distributing ballots in their Sunday papers, and some bars even refusing to serve alcohol to customers until they filled out a ballot. Then in 1999, a Massachusetts hacker was caught casting 39,000 votes online for Nomar Garciaparra, shortstop for the Boston Red Sox.

The only All Star Game to be cancelled was in 1945, because of severe wartime travel restrictions.

Only two games in All Star history have ended in ties. The first, in 1961, occurred when the game was halted in the 9th because of rain. Then in 2002, the game was called when both teams ran out of pitchers in the 11th inning and Commissioner Bud Selig called the game.

The longest All Star Game, by innings, occurred at Anaheim Stadium in 1967, with the game lasting 15 innings.

Hank Aaron, Willie Mays and Stan Musial have all played the most All Star Games, with 24 a piece. In addition, Hank Aaron and Willie Mays hold the record for most games played on a winning team, with 17 wins each.

Pete Rose holds the record for most positions played: 1st base, left field, 2nd base, 3rd base, and right field.

The most players used for an All Star Games was in 2002, when 30 American League players AND 30 National League players all took the field.

Gary Sheffield and Moises Alou have represented the most teams over their careers during All Star Games. The teams for Sheffield include: the San Diego Padres, Florida Marlins, Los Angeles Dodgers, Atlanta Braves, and New York Yankees. For Alou, his teams include: the Montreal Expos, Florida Marlins, Houston Astros, Chicago Cubs and San Francisco Giants.

Every team in both leagues must have one representative in the All Star Game.
