Sporting News NHL preview schedule
(Fri, 10 Sep 2010 10:31:00 PDT)
Notice a chill in the air? September arrives and bring the return of the National Hockey League -- on the ice, not in boardrooms, conventional halls or hearing chambers. Feel free to cheer. Sporting News notes the change in season with its 2010-11 Hockey yearbook, which previews the marathon to next June's crowning of a new Stanley Cup winner. To mark the occasion, SN provides online looks at all 30 teams, leading up to the season's start -- which again this year is in Europe.
Rangers Team Report
(Thu, 09 Sep 2010 21:15:10 PDT)
Sean Avery's job description isn't to score goals or to kill penalties.
As one of the NHL's best—and hence, most despised—agitators for the last several seasons, Avery understands his importance to the Rangers and how his effectiveness in his role helps shape the identity of his team.
Even before the start of training camp this September, the pain-in-the-neck winger acknowledged that he has to improve his overall game for the Blueshirts to avoid missing the playoffs for the second consecutive spring.
"I certainly have a different mentality going into camp this year than last year," Avery said recently. "It was a disappointing season for the team and from a personal standpoint.

(Wed, 08 Sep 2010 20:58:00 PDT)
Look for a Sept. 15 announcement giving the Ottawa Senators the 2012 All-Star Game. Commissioner Gary Bettman will be in Canada's capital that day for a luncheon. Also expected to attend, the Ottawa Sun reports, is Senators owner Eugene Melnyk, who reportedly was promised an All-Star weekend after the 2008 draft. The festivities would be in conjunction with the 20th anniversary of the Senators' return to the NHL. ... Free-agent forward Ryan Potulny landed a gig for next season, as the Chicago Tribune reports he signed with the Blackhawks.

(Fri, 27 Aug 2010 14:58:00 PDT)
As negotiations between the New York Rangers and restricted free agent Marc Staal drag on into late August, rumors of pending offer sheets for the talented young defenseman have started to surface. But offer sheets aren’t the focus right now, said Staal agent Paul Krepelka of the Orr Hockey Group. “The report of an offer sheet is absolutely unfounded and our priority and focus is on finalizing a deal with the Rangers,” Krepelka wrote in an e-mail to Sporting News.
